One of the biggest problems with websites today is that so many of them are so hard to use. Many websites are not intuitive and are not designed with the users in mind. These websites are designed and developed by people that are not thinking about the people who will be using their site.
This is a huge problem for several reasons, but I want to highlight a couple. First, it is just inconsiderate and impolite. Your users won't feel important, and they won't enjoy their experience on your site. Second, if your site is hard to navigate, they won't find what they are looking for. When users have a hard time finding any content on your site, they won't stick around. Even the most patient users know that there are many sites just like yours that will be easy to use, and they will leave your site if it is too difficult to figure out.
There are a few basic things that every site should have:
- Ultra easy navigation. Why? So that your users can find their way around your site to their goal. Is there any reason to have a site unless it has users? Not really. So it only makes sense to build a site that caters to those users. Don't bother with a website unless you can make it easy and intuitive to navigate.
- Obvious links. It should be painfully simple to find where to click next. Your users should be guided through your site, instead of expected to find their own way. Just remember that the “Back” button is likely the easiest button to find on your website. If you don't show them where to click, they already know.
- Answer all their questions. Your website doesn't have sales people, so your customers can't ask questions. But that certainly doesn't mean they don't have any. If users can't get answers to their questions, they are likely to go somewhere else. Their questions are the reason they are on your site, so if they aren't answered, there is simply no reason to stay on your site.
